Important Topics Of Thermal Properties Of Matter
• Wein’s Displacement Law
• Stefan’s Law
• Thermal Conductivity
PDF Of Thermal Properties Of Matter:
This Chapter Includes So many Topics But these 3 are Important Topics. We tried our best to Prepare these Handwritten Notes In Simple & Understandable language.
Content Of Thermal Properties Of Matter:
Heat, Temperature, Thermal expansion, Thermal expansion of Solids, Liquids & Gases, Anomalous Expansion of water, Specific heat capacity Cp, Cv – Calorimetry : Change of State – Latent heat Capacity. Heat transfer – Conduction, Convection & Radiation, Thermal conductivity, Qualitative idea of Black Body Radiation, Wein’s displacement law, Stefan’s law.
Wein’s Displacement law:
If Lambda is wavelength Corresponding to Maximum radiant energy emitted & T is absolute Temperature of Body then lambda (T) = Constant.lambda = b /T
where b= 0.29 × 10-2mK
Heat:Heat is form of energy that flows between a body & It’s surrounding Medium due to temperature Difference. S. I unit of Heat energy is Joule.
Thermal Expansion: A change in Temperature of a body Causes change in its dimensions. The increase in dimensions of a body due to increase in its temperature is known as thermal expansion.
Anomalous Expansion of Water : Generally Matter Expands on Heating & Contracts on Cooling. In Case of Water it expands on heating if it’s temperature is greater than 4°C .
• Water has a maximum density at 4 °C.
Specific Heat Capacity:
Specific Heat Capacity of a substance is defined as heat required to raise temperature of 1kg of substance through 1°C . ∆Q= mC ∆T
C = 1/m ∆Q/∆T
Molar Specific Heat:
Molar Specific heat of a substance is amount of heat required to raise temperature of 1 mole of Substance through 1°C.
Heat Transfer:
Heat is a form of energy which transfer from a body at higher temperature to a body at lower Temperature.
Modes of Heat Transfer:
• Conduction : It is the process in which heat is transmitted from one point to other through the substance without actual motion of Particles.
• Convection : It is the process in which heat is transmitted from one place to other by actual movement of heated particles.
• It is the process in which heat is transmitted from one place to other directly without necessity of intervening medium.
• Heat from sun reaches earth by Radiation.
• Black Body & Black Body Radiation
A Perfectly Black Body is one which absorbs all heat radiations of every wavelength incident on it. It neither reflects nor transmits any of the incident radiation & Therefore appears black whatever be colour of incident radiation.
• Stefan’s Boltzmann’s law:
It states that rate of radiant energy emitted by a black body per unit area per second is proportional to fourth power of absolute temperature. E = sigma T 4
